Clash Over Market Relocation in Kerala Sparks Protests

On Tuesday morning, intense protests erupted at Palayam market as traders and laborers rallied against the relocation to a new site being inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The protesters voiced concerns about the size of the new shops and the lack of access to public transport.

CPI(M) affiliated traders, however, supported the relocation to the new, modern complex at Kalluthankadavu, praising its spaciousness and facilities. They argued that shifting the market could help alleviate traffic congestion issues in the city center.

Protestors, who carried black flags and shouted slogans, argued that the decision was made without consultation. They also claimed that smaller traders were marginalized and expressed fears about job losses for laborers due to the move.
