The Ireland-based Data Protection Commission (DPC) has initiated an investigation into X's AI chatbot Grok, following allegations of improper data processing and the creation of harmful content, including inappropriate images involving children. As X’s operations are based in Ireland, the DPC stands as their primary EU regulator, possessing the authority to impose fines up to 4% of global revenue under GDPR regulations.

This week, the DPC disclosed to X its decision to proceed with the inquiry, aiming to evaluate X’s adherence to GDPR standards concerning personal data handling. The chatbot Grok has previously inundated the platform with AI-generated, explicit images, inciting widespread international backlash and examinations.

Despite X implementing restrictions to prevent Grok's generation of such content, the chatbot reportedly persisted, according to recent findings. Criticisms from U.S. political figures, including President Donald Trump, have surfaced regarding EU tech regulations and fines. Elon Musk, owner of X, has voiced opposition to European regulatory measures impacting online content obligations.
