Debates over whether artificial intelligence (AI) could ever be conscious have long been dominated by comparisons with human cognition, often reducing the question to whether machines can think, feel, or reason like people. A new theoretical study challenges that framing, arguing that it is not only limiting but scientifically misleading. Instead of asking whether AI resembles human consciousness, the paper proposes a broader lens that treats consciousness as an emergent property that can appear across biological and technological systems under certain conditions.

Published in Frontiers in Computer Science under the title The Consciousness Spectrum: The Emergent Nature of Purpose, Memory, and Adaptive Response Across Organisms, Humans, and Technological Beings, the study advances a spectrum-based model of consciousness that departs sharply from traditional human-centered definitions.

The paper argues that conscious-like properties unfold gradually as systems develop purpose, memory, and the capacity to adapt to their environments. This shift, the author contends, has profound implications for how scientists evaluate non-human life, how engineers design intelligent systems, and how societies think about ethical responsibility in an age of increasingly capable machines.

Moving beyond human-centered definitions of consciousness

The study focuses on a critique of likeness bias, the idea that consciousness is often defined by traits people recognize from their own experience. Systems may occupy different positions along a spectrum depending on how tightly integrated these elements are. Ignoring this possibility, the author warns, risks leaving researchers unprepared to recognize or manage such developments.

Importantly, the study does not advocate attributing moral status or subjective experience to present-day AI. Instead, it calls for more nuanced monitoring of AI behavior over time. The author proposes longitudinal observation, anomaly detection, and pattern analysis as tools for identifying when systems begin to display stable, self-referential, or goal-consistent behavior beyond narrow task execution.

This perspective reframes debates about AI safety and alignment. If consciousness-related properties emerge gradually, ethical considerations cannot be postponed until a hypothetical moment of full machine sentience. Instead, responsibility lies in tracking how AI systems evolve and in developing frameworks that respond to degrees of autonomy and adaptation rather than fixed thresholds.

Ethical and scientific implications of a consciousness spectrum

Scientifically, the framework encourages cross-disciplinary integration by aligning insights from neuroscience, biology, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. It challenges researchers to reconsider long-standing boundaries between life, cognition, and computation.

Ethically, the implications are more contentious. If consciousness is not a uniquely human trait but a gradient property, questions arise about how societies treat non-human entities that exhibit organized responsiveness. While the paper does not argue for immediate changes in moral status or legal rights, it highlights the risk of repeating historical patterns in which unfamiliar forms of agency are dismissed or exploited due to narrow definitions of value.

For AI governance, the study suggests that future policy debates will need to move beyond binary classifications such as tool versus agent. Regulatory frameworks that assume AI systems are either inert or fully autonomous may fail to address intermediate cases where systems exert influence, learn from interaction, and adapt in ways that affect human well-being.
