In a significant development, India and Russia have solidified a partnership for the joint production of a twin-engine narrow-body passenger aircraft, the SJ-100. This collaboration is a testament to the growing strategic ties between the two nations and marks a pivotal moment in India's aviation history.
The agreement was formalized in Moscow between state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC). Present at the signing were HAL's Chairman and Managing Director DK Sunil alongside PJSC-UAC Director General Vadim Badekha. HAL announced that the SJ-100 will play a crucial role in enhancing short-haul connectivity under India's UDAN scheme.
The production of the SJ-100 in India not only advances the nation's self-reliance vision in the civil aviation sector but also promises significant economic benefits. It is anticipated that over 200 jets will be needed in the next decade for regional connectivity, alongside additional aircraft for the Indian Ocean region, potentially creating numerous jobs in the aviation industry.
