Asian Cup Bidding Halted Amid Global Calendar Shift
The Asian Football Confederation has paused the bidding for the 2031 and 2035 Asian Cup due to potential changes in the global football calendar. Discussions with FIFA about reorganizing the international match schedule have prompted a comprehensive review. Six bids for 2031 and multiple bids for 2035 had been submitted.
The bidding process for the 2031 and 2035 Asian Cup tournaments has been suspended, as per the announcement made by the Asian Football Confederation on Friday. This decision stems from discussions regarding intended changes to the global football calendar.
The Kuala Lumpur-based body is in talks with FIFA about potentially rescheduling international matches, which could shift the Asian Cup to even-numbered years. This potential alteration has prompted the AFC to undertake a broad review of its tournaments' calendar.
Consequently, the ongoing bidding cycles have been paused to ensure clarity and a more systematic approach to selecting future hosts. Six bids were submitted for the men's 2031 finals, involving noteworthy contenders such as Australia, India, and South Korea.
