Michael Bambang Hartono, one of Indonesia's wealthiest individuals and co-leader of the prominent Djarum Group, died on Thursday at 86. In a statement, Djarum expressed their deep sorrow, thanking him for his dedication and service.

Hartono, along with his brother Robert Budi Hartono, amassed an estimated $43.8 billion fortune according to Forbes in 2025, securing their position atop Indonesia’s rich list. Their business acumen saw them lead Djarum, a leading clove cigarette manufacturer, and diversify into electronics, food, telecom, and more. The group also owns a 54.9% stake in Bank Central Asia, Indonesia’s largest bank.

A bridge enthusiast, Michael won a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games. He likened bridge to business, highlighting the importance of strategy and decision-making. Despite their success, the Hartono family remained private about their lives and assets.
