Sahith Theegala, an American golfer of Indian descent, showcased an extraordinary performance on the first day of the Players Championship. He holed a wedge shot from 99 yards for an eagle, finishing with a 5-under 67 round and tying for the lead just as play was halted due to darkness.
Theegala was in a five-way tie with Maverick McNealy, Lee Hodges, Sepp Straka, and Austin Smotherman. Last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational winner Akshay Bhatia ended the day at T-30 with a score of 1-under 71, while other Indian origin players such as Sudarshan Yellamaraju and Aaron Rai were placed further down the leaderboard.
Returning from a period of injury, Theegala reflects on his recovery, citing improved speed and conditioning. He was particularly thrilled with the eagle on the back nine, describing it as a rewarding bonus.
