Southern Californian tennis player Learner Tien reflected on a poignant victory at his home tournament in Indian Wells. On Sunday, he advanced to the next round by defeating fellow American, Ben Shelton, with a score of 7-6(3) 4-6 6-3.
Tien, age 20, recalled sitting as a young boy in the stands of the very stadium where he now competes—a dream come true for the Irvine native. "It's really a full-circle moment for me," he shared, expressing gratitude for his upbringing in a tennis-friendly region.
Tien’s journey wasn't easy against world number eight, Shelton, who put up a strong fight despite battling illness. Tien managed to overcome nerves to secure his victory, setting a notable record against top-10 players. Up next, he faces Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
