In a decisive move, Wolfsburg has dismissed both its coach Daniel Bauer and managing director for sport Peter Christiansen, following an extended winless streak in the Bundesliga that stretched to eight games. The dismissals come after a string of poor performances culminated in a 2-1 home defeat to Hamburger SV, leaving the club, backed by Volkswagen, struggling in the relegation zone with nine rounds remaining.
The interim head coach Bauer, who previously coached the Under-19 team, took over after Paul Simonis was dismissed in November, but has been unable to change the team's fortunes. Fans expressed their frustration during and after the latest loss, with some resorting to throwing flares onto the field, producing black smoke behind the goal, while others displayed critical banners directed at the team.
Christiansen, who had been in his managerial role since 2024, had to face the music as performance pressure mounted. Despite his efforts in enhancing women's football within the club, the men's team's consistent poor results led to this drastic decision. Wolfsburg announced that a new head coach would be named soon, with speculation pointing to Dieter Hecking returning to guide the club to safety.
