In a dramatic turn of events, two sailors were injured in a high-speed collision between New Zealand and France during the SailGP race in Auckland on Saturday. The crash, which occurred at nearly 90 kilometers per hour, led to severe damage to both vessels and the day's racing being called off.
Television footage suggested that as the fleet approached the first gate, the New Zealand yacht lost control and collided with the French boat. The intense impact left the two boats locked together, and the injured sailors were swiftly taken to the hospital, where they were reported to be awake and alert.
This incident follows New Zealand's earlier crash with Switzerland and comes as teams, racing identical 50-foot catamarans capable of reaching speeds up to 100 kph, prepare for Sunday’s races. The second day of racing will begin early due to looming thunderstorms.
