The Supreme Court has lifted its 2017 restrictions on Anurag Thakur, the former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), enabling him to resume participating in the board's affairs according to its rules and regulations.
In January 2017, the court had ruled for Thakur to cease involvement with the BCCI, following proceedings related to a false affidavit he filed about the board's autonomy and writing to ICC's then-chairperson Shashank Manohar. The case, centered around contempt and perjury, was dropped in July 2017 after Thakur's unconditional apology.
On Thursday, Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, applying the doctrine of proportionality, modified the initial 2017 order. This decision, based on an application by Thakur seeking modification, was influenced by his earlier apology.
