In a stirring endorsement for his former teammates, MS Dhoni has thrown his weight behind Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli by urging the cricket fraternity to focus on their performance and fitness rather than their age as criteria for the upcoming 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. Speaking at a televised event, Dhoni addressed scrutiny surrounding Sharma and Kohli's longstanding cricket careers.
The legendary captain articulated that age should not dictate a player's viability in the sport, stressing, “Performance and fitness decide their place, not age.” His remarks were clear: whether a player is younger or in his 30s, the decision to play should depend on their contribution and health.
Rohit and Virat, who recently returned to international action amid ongoing debates of their suitability for future tournaments, demonstrated their capability in Australia's ODI series. Kohli, in particular, showcased his resilience with consistent performances. Both cricketers also played domestic cricket to maintain form and continue mentoring the next generation of Indian talent. Their next international stint will be in England come mid-July for another ODI series.
