Legal Rally: Wimbledon Expansion Under Fire

Wimbledon’s expansive redevelopment project, aiming to add 39 new courts to its iconic grounds, found itself entrenched in legal proceedings again on Friday. Campaigners, led by Save Wimbledon Park, once more challenged the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club's plans to significantly increase the site's size.

The club, backed by prominent players and some locals, proposes transforming a former golf course into new sporting facilities. However, protestors maintain that the land must remain designated for public recreation, arguing it falls under a statutory trust.

The legal battle returned to London's High Court as the club seeks to affirm its stance that the land has not historically been used for recreation. A colorful protest, including activists dressed as tennis balls, underscored the tension surrounding the expansion and its potential community impacts.
