Four-Year Ban for Former Badminton Coach Joachim Persson Amid Betting Scandal
Joachim Persson, ex-coach and former badminton player, receives a four-year ban for betting. The Badminton World Federation confirms his actions during the Japan Open and previous offenses. Despite being a prominent figure in badminton, his actions resulted in severe consequences, emphasizing strict anti-betting regulations in the sport.
Joachim Persson, a former top badminton player and coach, has been handed a four-year ban by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for betting on matches. The Danish coach was found to have placed bets via his phone during the Japan Open, just weeks after the Paris Olympics.
An investigation unveiled that Persson, who was captured on film by a player while betting, showed visible shock when confronted. He was formerly a top European player, clinching a silver medal in singles at the 2008 European Championship and was until recently coaching top-ranked player Anders Antonsen.
The BWF stated that the ban underscores the zero-tolerance policy for betting in badminton, emphasizing the importance of reporting any misconduct. Aggravating factors in the verdict included Persson's prior betting ban, use of a proxy gambling account, and misuse of insider information.
