An elephant calf, trapped in a rock crevice in Attappadi's Abbannoor, has been successfully rescued, according to forest officials. Discovered by local tribal residents early Tuesday morning, the calf had precariously slipped between the rocks.
Despite locals waiting in hopes of the mother elephant's return until evening, the mother never appeared. Forest officials intervened, rescuing the young elephant, which is estimated to be about 2.5 years old. They suspect the calf became stuck after accidentally getting separated from its mother.
The calf currently remains under close watch in the forest, as authorities work towards reuniting it with its herd. Should the herd fail to return, a plan is in place to relocate the calf to a forest station for rehabilitation.
