A planned demolition turned tragic in Nairobi, as a building collapse resulted in the deaths of at least four people, with four more sustaining injuries, according to officials.
The incident took place on Monday within the Blue Estate community, Shauri Moyo, during the Nairobi River Regeneration Project. Rescue teams, comprising army personnel and other institutions, were active at the site, searching for individuals trapped under the rubble. The Interior Ministry confirmed the event, expressing uncertainty regarding the cause of the deadly collapse.
Demolition-related deaths underscore a broader issue in Nairobi's construction industry. Following a series of collapses in 2015, which claimed 15 lives, a national audit revealed over half of Nairobi's buildings fail safety standards, reflecting negligence in adhering to building regulations amid soaring housing demand.
