A tragic gas explosion erupted in an apartment building in Karachi, Pakistan's largest port city, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, including women and children. The catastrophic event has left several others injured, as confirmed by police and rescue officials on Thursday.
The explosion shattered the residential calm in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, with local police chief Rizwan Patel indicating that part of the structure collapsed due to the blast. Rescuers are racing against time, sifting through the wreckage to find any survivors still trapped under the debris.
Most Karachi homes use natural gas for cooking, but low pressure prompts reliance on liquefied petroleum gas cylinders. In a similar unfortunate incident in July, a gas explosion during a wedding in Islamabad had resulted in eight fatalities, highlighting the recurring danger linked to gas-related accidents in Pakistan.
