The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to identify 24 acres of alternate land in Mumbai or nearby for compensatory afforestation due to the felling of 1,039 trees for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project.
During the November 17, 2025 ruling, the court had instructed the BMC to urgently allow tree felling while ensuring compensatory efforts are swiftly executed. The bench emphasized accountability, calling for progress affidavits from the BMC, with potential penalties for non-compliance.
The case highlights ongoing scrutiny over compensatory afforestation, spotlighting past oversights in Mumbai and insisting on concrete steps for future projects, including the impact on the forthcoming metro rail developments.
