A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan before dawn, resulting in at least 20 deaths and over 300 injuries, according to local health officials.
The epicenter was determined to be 22 kilometers west-southwest of Khulm, hitting at a depth of 28 kilometers and causing widespread tremors across Balkh, Samangan, and Baghlan provinces.
Rescue efforts are concentrated in the badly damaged areas, with governmental and UN teams assisting. The quake also caused damage to the historic Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif, highlighting infrastructural vulnerability amid Afghanistan’s ongoing challenges.
