A tragic bus fire in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, resulted in the death of 19 passengers, with survivors recounting harrowing experiences as they narrowly escaped the inferno. The incident occurred when the sleeper bus caught fire, likely due to a previous motorbike accident or a self-fall, according to authorities.
The blaze, intensified by flammable materials, spread rapidly, trapping passengers. Many were asleep at the time, and the situation worsened as the bus door became jammed due to a short circuit. Forensic teams are working to identify bodies charred beyond recognition, while nine injured passengers receive treatment.
The Andhra Pradesh government, alongside Telangana and Karnataka, has pledged financial assistance to victims' families. A committee will investigate the tragedy, examining details like the vehicle's All India permit and fitness certificate. Political leaders, including PM Modi and CM Naidu, expressed condolences and announced ex-gratia amounts for affected families.
