Diwali Celebrations Trigger Pollution Spike in Thane
Pollution surged during Diwali festivities in Thane, with air quality and noise levels rising despite rainy weather. An official report noted an 11.1% increase in air pollution and elevated particulate matter. Authorities encourage eco-friendly practices like green fireworks to mitigate environmental impact during festivals.

During the Lakshmi Puja and Diwali festivities, pollution levels surged sharply, as reported by the Thane Municipal Corporation. This rise occurred despite the area's rainy weather conditions, according to officials.
The TMC report highlighted an 11.1% increase in air pollution levels on Lakshmi Puja day, in contrast to pre-Diwali levels. It also recorded a rise in particulate matter levels reaching 139 ug/m3.
The air quality index climbed from 141 to 157 during the Diwali celebrations. Additionally, noise levels also saw a 3.2% hike during the festivities. In response, TMC’s chief environmental officer, Manisha Pradhan, urged citizens to adopt eco-friendly practices, recommending green fireworks as a viable alternative.
