The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has successfully gathered approximately three metric tonnes of used earthen lamps, known as diyas, following the conclusion of the festive season. This initiative, led by Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, is part of a broader effort to enhance sustainable waste management practices in the nation's capital.
In collaboration with the Why Waste Wednesdays Foundation, the civic body's Swachh Vaahini initiative, a CSR project of the Tehkhand Waste to Electricity Project (TWEPL), is playing a pivotal role in ensuring clean cityscapes. The project involves significant participation from Resident Welfare Associations across Delhi, who are actively assisting in the collection and processing of festive waste.
Collected items like diyas and idols are being directed to construction and demolition waste processing facilities, ensuring environmentally safe disposal. Mayor Singh emphasized the importance of this initiative in fostering sustainable waste disposal habits among residents, urging them to segregate their waste for Swachh Vaahini teams to collect. Citizens can also request doorstep pickup via WhatsApp at 8002044982 as part of the ongoing campaign for a cleaner, greener Delhi.
