Press Freedom Under Fire in Argentina: Spy Glasses Spark Controversy
Argentina's government under President Javier Milei blocked journalists from Casa Rosada citing 'illegal espionage.' This response followed a TV network's use of smart glasses to record footage. The decision raised concerns about press freedom amid Milei's ongoing conflicts with the media since December 2023.
Press freedom in Argentina is under scrutiny as President Javier Milei's government blocked accredited journalists from entering the government house, Casa Rosada, on Thursday. The move comes in the wake of a security incident involving 'illegal espionage' when a local TV network broadcast footage recorded using smart glasses.
Communications director Javier Lanari announced the preventative measure of removing journalists' fingerprint access following a security complaint. President Milei took to social media, labeling the journalists involved as 'DISGUSTING TRASH,' after a report by network TN showed footage from Casa Rosada, inciting a wave of controversy.
Accredited journalists condemned the 'unjustified' decision, suggesting it attacks press freedom and the public's right to information. This incident further escalates tensions between Milei's government and the media, with press-freedom groups warning of deteriorating relations since Milei assumed office in December 2023.
