U.S. Labor Shift: Chavez-DeRemer Exits Amidst Controversy
U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer has resigned following misconduct allegations. Her deputy, Keith Sonderling, will step in as acting secretary. Chavez-DeRemer's departure marks the third recent resignation from President Trump's cabinet amid tensions surrounding the administration's political strategies and fallout from the conflict with Iran.
On Monday, U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned amidst allegations of misconduct at the department. Her deputy, Keith Sonderling, has been appointed as the acting secretary, according to a statement from the White House.
Chavez-DeRemer, reflecting on her time in office, affirmed her continued commitment to advocating for American workers after transitioning to the private sector. She becomes the third cabinet member to exit President Trump's team in recent weeks, following the removals of Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi. This shift comes as Trump contemplates wider cabinet changes due to increasing friction over political repercussions from the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Chavez-DeRemer took charge of the department in March 2025 with bipartisan endorsement from the U.S. Senate. Unions like the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and AFL-CIO supported her nomination. Nonetheless, her tenure has been marred by allegations leading to resignations among her senior staff. The department's inspector general has commenced an investigation into the misconduct claims involving Chavez-DeRemer and her aides.
