Congress Criticizes BJP's Delimitation-Linked Women's Reservation Bill

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday criticized the BJP for linking women's reservation with delimitation, calling it a potential cause of injustice to certain states. Speaking to reporters, he emphasized Congress' consistent support for women's reservation and accused the BJP of politicizing the issue ahead of state elections.

''The Women's Reservation Bill was passed by both Houses in 2023, but linking it with delimitation raises issues,'' Siddaramaiah said, referencing former PM Rajiv Gandhi's constitutional amendments for grassroots reservation. He pointed to the risk of northern states like Uttar Pradesh gaining undue parliamentary advantage through delimitation.

In a setback for the BJP, a Constitution Amendment Bill proposing a 33% reservation for women in legislatures by 2029 was defeated, with 298 supporting and 230 opposing in the Lok Sabha. Siddaramaiah accused political maneuvering as elections approach in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, reaffirming Congress' objection to delimitation, not women's reservation.
