In a diplomatic twist, Mahdieh Esfandiari, an Iranian national convicted of inciting terrorism in France, returned to Iran on Wednesday. This return followed closely on the heels of two French nationals, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, returning to France after their detainment over spying charges in Iran.

Esfandiari was sentenced in Paris to one year in prison, with a further three-year suspended sentence, and a permanent ban from French soil due to comments on the Hamas-led October attacks on Israel. Despite appealing the decision, she is now free, coinciding with the French citizens’ release from Tehran's Evin prison.

Reports surfaced alleging a prisoner swap deal, but both Iranian and French authorities have denied such transactions. French President Emmanuel Macron's office rebuffed claims of an official agreement, maintaining confidentiality over the negotiation terms.
