As the Assam Assembly elections approach, political parties are vying for the attention of young voters by offering promises of free education and job creation. This demographic notably shapes the electoral landscape, prompting the current government to highlight ongoing educational schemes.
Karavi Barman, an academic at Gauhati University, notes how schemes such as 'Nijut Moina' and 'SVAYEM' have significantly aided students from economically poorer backgrounds. However, the Students' Federation of India argues these initiatives offer temporary relief rather than long-term, structural fixes in education.
While the ruling BJP focuses on continuing its schemes, the Congress party emphasizes in-state job opportunities. The debate underscores a growing need for educational reform and meaningful employment opportunities, as the state prepares for elections on April 9, with results expected May 4.
