Lok Sabha Expansion Sparks Controversy: Congress Accuses Modi Government
The Congress has accused the Modi government of planning to push through a bill to increase the Lok Sabha's size by 50%, disadvantaging smaller southern states. The opposition claims it could disrupt existing state seat proportions, with criticisms from Telangana's Chief Minister and concerns about potential impacts on the South, Northeast, and West.

The Congress party has raised alarms over a purported plan by the Modi administration to expand the Lok Sabha by 50%, according to a statement made by Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh. The move reportedly includes increasing seats for each state by 50%, which critics argue would disadvantage smaller states in India's South, Northeast, and West.
Jairam Ramesh voiced concerns that such a proposal would exacerbate disparities, citing states like Uttar Pradesh gaining significantly more seats compared to smaller southern states. He argued that this imbalance would deepen existing gaps, stating, "For instance, Uttar Pradesh's Lok Sabha representation would leap from 80 to 120 seats, whereas Tamil Nadu's seats would increase from 39 to 59."
The legislative changes have stirred reactions from regional leaders, including Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. This controversy follows closely on the heels of debates on other parliamentary reforms, such as women's reservations. Opposition parties suggest these moves may be attempts by the government to divert focus from pressing national issues.
