West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged on Friday that the central government was planning to revoke people's citizenship under the guise of the NRC and the Census following the state's assembly elections. Speaking at a press conference for the TMC's manifesto release, Banerjee insisted that an 'unofficial President's Rule' had been imposed ahead of the polls.
Banerjee warned citizens to remain vigilant, as she believed the Centre planned to remove citizenship rights post-election. She also accused the government and the Election Commission of working together on a delimitation exercise designed to favor the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Concerns were raised about state officials being transferred to foster a favorable environment for the BJP.
The Chief Minister further alleged that the Election Commission's actions had paved the way for an 'unofficial President's Rule' in West Bengal, accusing the BJP of orchestrating these moves due to fears of electoral defeat. Banerjee criticized the targeting of certain community members in the SIR process, citing significant disparities in case adjudications and cancellations.
