The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first candidate list for the Assam Assembly elections, featuring a mix of seasoned politicians and new faces. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to contest from Jalukbari, attempting to secure his seat for the sixth time.
Among the 88 candidates, the party has prioritized both experience and fresh talents, with an increased representation of women. Notable female candidates include Ajanta Neog, Rupali Langthasa, and others. The BJP anticipates strong competition, with significant shifts, including Congress leaders now running under the BJP banner.
The BJP's Central Election Committee finalised the list in a strategic meeting attended by top leaders, with polling scheduled for April 9 and counting on May 4. This election poses a critical challenge for the BJP as it seeks to consolidate its influence in Assam.
