Cabinet Shuffle: Peru's Political Balancing Act

Peruvian President Jose Balcazar has initiated a reshuffle of his cabinet following the unexpected resignation of Prime Minister Denisse Miralles. Miralles resigned early Tuesday, just three weeks after being appointed, making her the latest in a series of short-lived officials in Peru's political sphere.

According to Peruvian law, the resignation of the prime minister mandates the resignation of all other ministers, although the president holds the authority to reinstate them. Balcazar responded swiftly by appointing Luis Enrique Arroyo, a seasoned former general, to the position of Prime Minister.

In further changes to the cabinet, Balcazar appointed Rodolfo Acuna, a deputy in the finance ministry, as the new economy minister. This reshuffle comes a mere month before national elections slated for April 12, signaling a period of political maneuvering as Balcazar prepares to transfer the presidential office on July 28.
