US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted on Tuesday that Cuba needs fresh leadership to address its deepening economic issues, as the current regime fails to stabilize the island's economy. The statement follows substantial power outages, the third in four months, highlighting major energy challenges and escalating political tensions with US President Donald Trump.
Cuba's outdated electrical grid has increasingly deteriorated, causing frequent daily outages and significant blackouts. The Cuban government blames these issues on a US energy blockade, an outcome of Trump's warning in January about imposing tariffs on countries providing oil to Cuba.
During a meeting with Ireland's prime minister, when questioned about US intentions for regime change, Trump deferred to Rubio, who empathizes with his Cuban roots, stating the nation's economy falters under its political system. The administration insists on Cuba's release of political prisoners and both political and economic reforms in exchange for lifting sanctions. Moreover, Trump has proposed a potential 'friendly takeover.'
