In a significant political move, Motiur Rahman, a prominent BJP leader and social worker from West Bengal, has joined the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. This shift occurs as the state gears up for polls potentially scheduled for April. Rahman, who ran for the BJP in the 2021 assembly elections from Harishchandrapur, expressed his decision at the TMC headquarters, surrounded by senior party figures including Minister Bratya Basu and Rajya Sabha MP Nadimul Haque.
Despite his previous candidacy with the BJP, Rahman gained substantial support from voters, contributing to the BJP's emergence as the second-largest party in a traditionally Congress-dominated area. Basu highlighted Rahman's popularity and impact in the 2021 polls, stating, "A considerable number of people voted for Rahman rather than the BJP itself." Rahman's choice to align with the TMC underscores his commitment to participate in the state's developmental initiatives under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's leadership.
Rahman articulated his reasons for switching parties, citing dissatisfaction with the BJP's divisive political strategies and a desire to contribute towards ongoing development in rural Bengal. Expressing confidence in the TMC's plans, Rahman stated, "After Mamata Banerjee came to power, development has taken place." His move follows the precedent set by other leaders like Bishnu Prasad Sharma, indicating a trend of political realignments in West Bengal's dynamic political landscape.
