The first of two rescue flights orchestrated by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde successfully repatriated tourists stranded in the UAE due to escalating tensions in the West Asia region. The aircraft landed in Mumbai on Tuesday night carrying approximately 70 passengers, amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
The initiative, led by Shinde and assisted by Shiv Sena MLAs Murji Patel, Dilip Lande, and Mangesh Kudalkar, aims to bring back a total of 164 Maharashtra residents. The operation was set in motion following the US-Israel airstrikes on Iran and the subsequent retaliatory actions by Iran over the weekend.
The deputy chief minister has maintained communication with affected individuals since the beginning of the conflict. The promptly arranged flights departed from the UAE's Fujairah Airport, with further arrivals expected to ease the concerns of families awaiting their loved ones’ safe return amidst the turmoil.
