Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assamese community might become a minority by the 2027 Census. His remarks came during the Motion of Thanks on the governor's address in the assembly.
Sarma stated that the BJP-led Assam government is striving to maintain a 'lamp' that symbolizes courage amid demographic changes. He pointed out that by 2041, the Muslim population in Assam could equal the Hindu numbers if current trends persist. These potential shifts have been central to the state's political discourse.
The 2011 Census revealed Assam's Muslim population at 34.22%, with Muslims in the majority in nine of 27 districts, up from six of 23 districts in 2001. Sarma's statements reflect ongoing conversations about the region's demographic trajectory.
