Bulgaria's Caretaker Government: A Push for Fair Elections

The caretaker government in Bulgaria, helmed by Andrey Gyurov, has taken office following the resignation of the prior administration led by widespread protests. Gyurov's leadership comes amid Bulgaria's continued political unrest, as the caretaker team steps in to guide the country to national elections set for April 19.

In a unique move, Stoil Tsitselkov has been appointed as the minister for fair elections, a first for Bulgaria. This development follows consultations with various political factions. President Iliana Iotova entrusted Gyurov with the role of caretaker prime minister, establishing a temporary period of governance until a new administration is elected.

Gyurov, addressing parliament, emphasized the government's commitment not only to ensure transparent and fair elections but also to handle pressing governmental issues. Key among these is the preparation of the nation's new budget and setting the financial ground for 2026, amidst Bulgaria's transition to the euro zone on January 1.
