Lagarde Eyes Early ECB Exit Amid Macron's Presidential Role

Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank, is considering stepping down from her position before the French presidential election in 2027. This move is seen as a strategic decision to allow President Emmanuel Macron influence over the selection of her successor, as reported by the Financial Times.

Lagarde’s term officially ends in October 2027, but there are concerns that a far-right victory in the French elections could complicate the leadership transition at one of Europe’s most significant financial institutions. Sources suggest Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will play crucial roles in the decision-making process for the new ECB leader.

Despite these reports, an ECB spokesperson stated that President Lagarde remains focused on her duties, with no definitive decision made regarding her departure. The discussion comes amidst the recent announcement by Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau to resign ahead of his term’s end, offering Macron a chance to appoint a successor before the crucial election.
