In Budapest on Sunday, Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar officially launched his party's electoral campaign, announcing his ambition to steer Hungary back towards a Western orientation. This pivotal election will see Magyar confront Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, marking a significant challenge against Orbán's extensive leadership.
Magyar, who shifted from Orbán's Fidesz to establish the Tisza party, has quickly gained traction, securing 30% in European Parliament elections mid-2024. In his speech, he focused on domestic concerns like economic disparity and alleged corruption, criticizing Orbán's handling of Hungary's economy and external relations.
Furthermore, Tisza's detailed 239-page governing program emphasizes policy reforms, including commitments to tackle corruption, improve social services, and enhance Hungary's relation within the EU. With a compelling roster of professionals as candidates, Magyar aims to end Hungary's international isolation and foster economic recovery.
