Taiwan's President, Lai Ching-te, has declared the relationship with the United States as 'rock solid' despite ongoing tensions with China. His remarks came shortly after a discussion between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, focusing on Taiwan's future.
The island remains a significant point of contention, as China claims Taiwan as its territory but the US acts as its most influential informal backer, providing significant arms support. In December, the US announced a major arms sales package to Taiwan, valued at over $11.1 billion, further fueling tension with China.
While Taiwan's opposition has criticized the arms package and increased defense spending, US-China relations continue to evolve, with Trump planning a visit to China. Meanwhile, China is considering purchasing US soybeans, indicating a complex diplomatic and economic relationship.
