U.S.-Brokered Ukraine-Russia Talks: Progress Amid Conflict
Amidst ongoing conflict, Ukrainian and Russian officials concluded a productive first day of U.S.-brokered talks in Abu Dhabi, focusing on practical solutions. Despite engagements, major differences remain over territorial disputes and control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Moscow seeks Ukrainian troop withdrawal, while Ukraine opposes concessions.
Ukrainian and Russian officials reported a 'productive' first day after new U.S.-mediated talks held in Abu Dhabi, as war continues in Europe. The trilateral discussions follow Ukraine's assertions of Russia exploiting a U.S.-backed truce to amass munitions, resulting in a significant missile attack.
The head of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, Rustem Umerov, described the meetings as focused on concrete steps and practical solutions. A U.S. official also called the talks productive, with discussions set to continue the following day. However, major divergences persist, especially concerning territory and control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility.
Despite the efforts, Russian forces attacked an eastern Ukrainian market, causing casualties. Moscow demands Ukrainian withdrawals from the Donetsk region, but Ukraine resists abandoning its defences. Meanwhile, public sentiment in Ukraine remains opposed to territorial concessions, as the conflict stretches into its fourth year.
