In a remarkable political maneuver, the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the faction led by his uncle Sharad Pawar, known as NCP (SP), have come together to contest the upcoming Pune Zilla Parishad elections. This decision follows their recent joint efforts in the municipal polls in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
Speculation about a possible merger of the factions led to discussions among senior leaders, including Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. They decided to contest all 24 Pune ZP seats as a united front, a collaboration underscored by the cooperation between once-rivals Harshvardhan Patil and Dattatray Bharne.
The alliance was made official following a pivotal meeting between Ajit Pawar and his cousin, Supriya Sule. Despite Ajit Pawar's party being part of the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition, the NCP factions had contested the Pune municipal elections together, faced by a strong BJP which clinched victories in both Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
