Corruption Scandal in Ukraine: $3 Million Embezzlement Probe
Ukrainian authorities have accused a former senior aide in President Zelenskiy's office of embezzling over $3 million through a solar energy scheme in occupied Zaporizhzhia. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau has named nine suspects. This follows a major energy sector scandal and Zelenskiy's anti-corruption crackdown.
Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities have accused a former senior aide in President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's office of embezzling more than $3 million as part of a green energy initiative. The alleged misconduct involved government payments claimed for solar power produced in the now Russia-controlled southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, according to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU).
The investigation has identified nine suspects, including the former deputy head of Zelenskiy's office, though officials have not released their names due to legal restrictions. Zelenskiy's office has yet to comment on the allegations, reflecting the heightened scrutiny and public outrage against lingering corruption at high levels in Ukraine.
This development is part of a broader effort by Ukraine's anti-graft agencies to root out corruption, particularly in light of a previous scandal involving a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector. President Zelenskiy, who has dismissed his chief of staff and initiated an administrative overhaul, has repeatedly stated his intolerance for corruption in his administration.
