In a surprising move, President Donald Trump is planning to pardon former Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vázquez, according to a White House official. Vázquez, who pled guilty to a campaign finance violation, was facing sentencing later this month.
The controversy stems from claims that the case involved high-profile individuals, including a former FBI agent and a Venezuelan banker, marking a significant federal investigation. Trump's decision appears to be based on the belief that Vázquez's prosecution was politically motivated, given that the investigation began shortly after her endorsement of him in 2020.
Vázquez, making history as the first former governor in the US territory to confess to a crime, was arrested last year. Federal prosecutors were seeking a one-year prison term for her role in accepting foreign donations for her political campaign.
