Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended U.S. aid to Argentina on Thursday, saying the country's president, an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, needed a bridge going into the election.

Argentina needed help after a legacy of financial mismanagement, Bessent said. "The 47 million Argentinians, we are helping them and a majority of them now want free markets," he said in an interview with Fox Business Network.

He added that no money has been spent, with the funds coming from the Treasury's $211 billion Exchange Stabilization Fund, which has been used to back Federal Reserve lending facilities during crises.
