UN Denounces US Embargo on Cuba Amid Cuba-Russia Allegations

In a pointed international rebuke, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor to end the longstanding U.S. economic embargo on Cuba, despite intensive lobbying by Washington, which included allegations of Cuban soldiers fighting in Ukraine alongside Russian forces.

The vote saw an impressive majority, with 165 nations in favor and just seven against, illustrating global discontent with the U.S. stance. Last year, a similar resolution saw 187 countries supporting ending the embargo.

Despite the pressure, Cuba has dismissed the U.S. claims as baseless. The U.S. Congress holds the power to lift the embargo, a policy deemed by Cuba as collectively punishing, restricting the nation’s human rights, and affecting every sector.
