Tension Soars Amid NRC-Fueled Citizenship Debate in Bengal
TMC's Abhishek Banerjee urged locals to confront BJP leaders demanding birth certificates during electoral roll revisions. Banerjee linked Pradeep Kar's suicide to NRC-related anxiety and blamed BJP and election officials. The BJP dismissed political accusations, viewing TMC's response as opportunistic ahead of upcoming elections.

In a fervent address, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee called on people to challenge BJP leaders requesting birth certificates during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls or NRC verifications.
Banerjee's comments followed the tragic suicide of Pradeep Kar, which he attributed to the pressure and fear induced by these exercises. Accusing Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Chief Election Commissioner of responsibility for the "climate of panic," Banerjee demanded legal action.
The BJP swiftly rebutted these claims, asserting that the processes were standard electoral procedures. As West Bengal braces for intense political battles, this incident has reignited contentious citizenship debates.
