The Justice Department under the Trump administration is set to resume executions using firing squads, a method long absent from federal protocols. Officials confirmed this strategy alongside reauthorizing pentobarbital single-drug lethal injections.
This move counters actions from the Biden administration, which had halted these practices over concerns they might cause unnecessary suffering. Under Trump's directive, the Justice Department aims to expedite federal executions after Biden had commuted numerous death sentences to life imprisonment.
Currently, three inmates are on federal death row. The Trump administration criticizes Biden's stance for lacking scientific support, reigniting debates over execution standards and humane methods. Five states currently permit execution by firing squad, while others employ alternative methods like electrocution and nitrogen gas inhalation.
