Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu witnessed an unusual electoral protest as the village of Perumpathu nearly unanimously boycotted the polls. In stark contrast to district-wide polling enthusiasm, only three out of 969 electors in Perumpathu voted.
The boycott was a response to a violent attack on the village in March, where a gang armed with deadly weapons left two dead and seven injured. Although district officials claim to have taken corrective measures, villagers dismissed their efforts as ineffective.
Despite pleas from Tirunelveli's District Collector and Election Officer, residents remained steadfast in their decision to abstain from voting, signaling a deep-rooted disillusionment with the electoral system's ability to ensure their safety.
