In Ettayapuram, the birthplace of the revolutionary poet Subramania Bharathi, a unique form of protest is taking shape. Villagers from Kulathuvaipatti and Kumaragiri have opted out of the 2026 Assembly election due to a long-standing pathway dispute with residents near a Sri Lankan refugee camp in their area.

The unresolved tension reached its climax on April 18 when a clash erupted, exacerbating the situation. For more than a decade, villagers have resorted to protests, including black flag demonstrations and sieges at local offices, but to no avail. As a result, they have collectively decided to abstain from voting until a solution is provided.

On the day of the election, officials confirmed that only a handful of votes had been cast at polling booth No 64, located in Panchayat Union Primary School in Vilathikulam constituency. This dramatic decrease in voter turnout highlights the villagers' determination to see the pathway dispute resolved.
