Kruger National Park Fire Disrupts Services at Lower Sabie Camp

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has urged visitors travelling to Lower Sabie Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park to arrive fully stocked with essential supplies, following a fire incident that damaged retail facilities at the popular tourist site.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, comes just days before two major public holiday weekends—Freedom Day (27 April) and Workers' Day (1 May)—during which the camp is already fully booked, raising concerns about service availability during one of the park's busiest periods.

Retail Facilities Affected, Core Tourism Activities Continue

SANParks confirmed that while the fire impacted the camp's retail shop, key tourism infrastructure remains intact.

"Accommodation has not been affected, with the camp fully booked for the upcoming two long weekends… Activities such as guided game drives and walks are continuing as normal," the agency said in a statement.

Lower Sabie is one of the most sought-after camps in the Kruger National Park, known for its prime wildlife viewing along the Sabie River. The assurance that accommodation and safari activities remain operational is expected to provide some relief to visitors with confirmed bookings.

Restaurant Closed Due to Power Disruptions

Although the camp's restaurant was not directly damaged by the fire, it has been forced to close temporarily due to power outages linked to the incident.

This has created a gap in food and beverage services, prompting SANParks to advise guests to prepare accordingly before entering the park.

To mitigate the disruption, the agency is working to introduce temporary retail and food services as quickly as possible, though no firm timeline has been confirmed.

SANParks has also issued a safety advisory, urging visitors to avoid the affected area while assessments and recovery operations are underway.

"SANParks urges guests at the camp to stay clear of the affected area for safety reasons," the statement noted.

Such precautions are standard following infrastructure fires, particularly in high-traffic tourist environments where residual risks may remain.

An official investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, with authorities expected to assess potential electrical faults, human activity, or other contributing factors.

While no injuries or fatalities have been reported, the incident highlights the vulnerability of key tourism infrastructure within protected areas, especially during peak travel periods.
